This
painting is of the replica Irish "Coffin" ship or "Famine"
ship, "Jeanie Johnston." During the potato famine in
Ireland during the 1840's many starving Irish emigrants sailed
to the U. S. to try to seek a better life. One of the ships that
made numerous trans-Atlantic voyages carrying those fleeing Ireland,
was the "Jeanie Johnston," a converted cargo ship which
made it's first crossing in April of 1848. By the time "Jeanie"
finished her mission in 1855 she had transported over 2500 emigrants
to America with the distinction of being the only coffin
ship' never to lose a passenger during a crossing. In 2003, the
replica "Jeanie" made her first trip to the U. S. and
stopped at many east coast ports, including Bristol, Bucks County,
PA.
